Video Creation

...if a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video must be priceless!

Our 21st Century Learners are constantly interacting with media.  They create, collaborate, edit, and problem solve.  Multi-media has permeated our society.  Letting students blend their learning with multi-media production is a motivating way to enage their participatory nature!  As a teacher, not only are you helping to increase students' opportunities to share their understanding, you are opening up new ways for learning.  iPads are a great tool to get you started!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

"What is Chroma Key?  What is Green Screen?"

Chroma Key / Green Screen video creation is filming in front of a green screen and then replacing that green background with other images or video footage.  This enables the subject to be place virtually anywhere!  By adding in green "props", such as a green sheet, you can increase the special effects.  For example, you can use the green sheet to create the effects of Harry Potter's "Invisibility Cloak"!  Drape the sheet over a desk. Then have a student lie on it to give the effects of flying!  Use green gloves to make hands disappear!  Become simply a floating head on the beach!

"Why is the screen GREEN?"

This is a very common question!  When looking at the colour wheel, green and blue are the farthest colours from flesh tones.  Therefore, when eliminating the greens with a background replacement, flesh tones are not altered.  If your subject needs to wear green, film in front of a blue background.

"Do I need to buy a special screen?  I have minimal or no budget."

Your green screen can be as simple as green paper, green paint on a wall, or green fabric.  While "kits" are available, you do not need to purchase any special materials.

"Can these apps only do Green Screen?"

GreenScreen by DoInk, and Veescope Live are basic, simple to use apps with minimal features.  This enables them to be easily used by students as young as those in primary grades.  iMovie offers many more features but is for a more advanced user.  For example, it enables the user to blend music, photos, text, video, and other images into one cohesive presentation.

"Are these the only green screen / video production apps available?"

Absolutely not!  With ongoing advances in technology, new apps and ideas are coming out all of the time!  It is impossible to feature them all. Therefore, we have focussed on some basic and more advanced apps as an introduction.
